What is "marketing?" Everyone seems to have a different definition.
Marketing…done right…is the basis of all commerce. Though many in business consider marketing a discretionary expense and therefore an option, for any enterprise that wants to survive, marketing is no more an option than a motor or wheels are "optional" in a car.
Don't Marketing and Advertising mean the same thing?
No. You can successfully market goods or services without ever advertising…in the sense of created and running a print, or TV/radio spot. However, advertising is generally considered part of a marketing program though, given the content of many contemporary ads, one could argue that advertising has nothing to do with marketing.
Do I have to market my business?
In case you skipped the first question let me put it this way. There is an old saying: "Running a business without marketing to potential customers is like waving at people in a pitch black room. You may know what you're doing, but no one else does."
I tried marketing once and it didn't work!
I tried using a straight razor once and nearly cut my throat. Obviously I didn't know what I was doing. Businesses spend 100's of billions of dollars marketing their message to current and potential customers. Or at least the smart ones do. And they do so because marketing works if the message is designed to get attention, be memorable, provoke a response and if it reaches those people who are most likely to buy what you sell.
How do I know what kind of marketing works best for my business?
Hire a pro. I feel that I qualify, but if you insist on DIY, create a message that will pique the interest of those people most interested in what you have to offer and will make them want to contact you, and choose a medium that will best reach them. BTW - this is called targeted marketing.
How does marketing work?
In simple terms, marketing is getting your message in front of people who want or need what it is you do or make. The key to marketing is creating a message that get attention, is easy to remember and motivates people to buy from you.
I hear a lot about brands. What are they?
Brands are one of the most powerful marketing tools. Simply put, brands are the personalities associated with organizations. For example, if you think "Starbucks" when coffee is mentioned, then you have been touched by the brand. Most people associate brands with large companies, but branding techniques work equally well for small businesses with limited budgets. In fact, branding is an effective way to make your limited dollars work two or three times as hard. Brand icons, or character mascots are a major component of many brands.
